Yet Present. Zhalan, the Oldest Christian Cemetery in BeijingBy Edward J. Malatesta, S.J. and GAO Zhiyu Documents the 400-year history of the first Christian cemetery in Beijing. First known as the Portuguese cemetery, and then as Zhalan (Shala), the cemetery was provided in 1611 by the emperor Wanli as a burial ground for Matteo Ricci, and later, for many other missionaries who followed Ricci in the imperial service or those dedicated more intensely to direct pastoral work. |
