The Ricci Institute for Chinese-Western Cultural History
at the University of San Francisco Center for the Pacific Rim
TRAVEL GRANTS

The Ricci Institute for Chinese-Western Cultural History at the University of San Francisco Center for the Pacific Rim annually awards travel grants to encourage faculty members, graduate students, and other researchers from outside of the San Francisco Bay Area to use the Institute’s library and archival collections for their research. Research topics may include, but are not limited to Chinese-Western cultural exchange, interaction and/or encounters, Jesuit interaction with China from the late Ming through early 20th century, and/or the history of Christianity in China.

The Ricci Institute offers two types of travel grants (applicants may apply for one only):

Domestic

  • Domestic travel grants are intended to help defer the expenses of scholars traveling from within the United States to the USF Ricci Institute to perform research utilizing its archival and library collections.
  • Each domestic travel grant provides up to $1,000 for approved expenses related to travel-related costs to conduct research at the Institute; preference will be given to applicants who will be in residence at the Institute for a minimum of one week/five working days.

International

  • International travel grants are intended to help defer the expenses of scholars traveling from outside of the United States to the USF Ricci Institute to perform research utilizing its archival and library collections.
  • Each grant provides up to $2,000 for approved expenses related to travel-related costs to conduct research at the Institute; preference will be given to applicants who will be in residence at the Institute for a minimum of one week/five working days.)

Travel grant recipients are invited to participate in Ricci Institute and Center for the Pacific Rim events during the time of their residency. If feasible, they are also invited to give a presentation on their research to the University community. At the end of their residence, they are asked to submit a brief written report on the value of having used the resources at the Ricci Institute for their research.

Awards are funded by the EDS-Stewart Chair for Chinese-Western Cultural History and, for scholars of Asian descent, the Ricci Asian Scholars Endowment.

Deadlines for applications:
For the 2015 spring semester: December 15, 2014
For the summer period and the fall 2015 semester: March 31, 2015
For the 2014 Special Summer Travel Grants Applications: April 15, 2014.

Application Process:
A complete application consists of:
[1] A cover letter
[2] A current C.V.
[3] A proposed budget including other funding sources, if any
[4] The names and contact information for two references
[5] Proof of citizenship/visa status (non U.S. citizens only)
[6] A successful research proposal (600 words maximum) will include
- a review of progress already made by the applicant;
- plans for further research at the USF Ricci Institute;
- timeline or schedule of on-site activities;
- and the contribution the research would make in the relevant field(s) and to the mission of the USF Ricci Institute (priority consideration will be given to applicants who demonstrate in their application how the Ricci Institute’s library holdings will facilitate their research.)

NOTE: Travel Grant funds are expected to supplement the applicant’s own resources used for travel to and stay in the San Francisco Bay Area for work done while in residence at the USF Ricci Institute. Award amounts are maximums based on receipts presented and will not be exceeded regardless of expenses incurred. Nominal limits of $450 for domestic airfare, $200/night for local hotel accommodation, and $50/day for meals are imposed by the University. Travel Grant funds may not be used for the purchase of software or computing technology. Please note that without exception all awardees must have a U.S. Social Security number in order to receive their reimbursements (may be applied for upon arrival in San Francisco.)
