Born in Massachusetts, Eugenia Rowland lived on Army posts on the East and West Coasts and in Hawaii. After attending Carnegie Mellon and the University of Hawaii, she received two degrees from the University of Southern California and her PhD from the University of California at Berkeley. In 1950, she entered the San Rafael Dominican Convent and served on the faculty of Dominican College.
