Christian Sarcophagi

15. Christian Sarcophagi
Yuan dynasty (1272—1368)
Quanzhou Maritime Museum
Ricci 15 KP 0015

Two decorated Christian sarcophagi have end sections with carved crosses on cloud designs. The evidence from the iconography on these and other pieces clearly demonstrates Chinese-Buddhist acculturation unprece-dented in South-East Asia at the time.

Each piece has a flat underside and probably formed a lid to a burial vault.
