This public forum consists of a series of short lectures presented by a panel of four scholars from the Ricci Institute of the University of San Francisco. Each lecture will focus on one specific subject area and explore how China and the West interacted through Christianity in the Ming-Qing period. Specific emphasis will be on the exchanges between the Jesuit missionaries and the Qing imperial court.

11:15-12:00 noon - Lecture I

“Shooting for the Stars: The Jesuits at the Qing Court” by Eugenio Menegon.
Mr. Menegon is a Research Associate of the USF Ricci Institute and Ph.D. candidate at the University of California, Berkeley.

2:00-2:35 p.m. - Lecture II

"Be Kind to Men from Afar: Jesuit Artists in the Forbidden City" by Lauren Arnold.
Ms. Lauren Arnold is an art historian and Research Associate of the USF Ricci Institute. She recently published a book on Chinese-Western cultural exchange in art in the Yuan dynasty.

2:40-3:15 p.m. - Lecture III

"The Mechanics of Heaven: the Jesuits and Sino-Western Technology" by Mark Mir.
Mr. Mark Mir is a librarian and Research Fellow of the USF Ricci Institute. He is also the chief editor of the Ricci 21st Century Roundtable Database for the study of history of Christianity in China at the Ricci Institute.

3:20-3:50 p.m. - Lecture IV

Philosophy and cultural exchange with concluding remarks "Fusion or confusion? Learning the 'grammar of the Chinese object'?" by Dr. Paul Rule.
Dr. Paul Rule is Distinguished Fellow of the EDS-Stewart Chair at the USF Ricci Institute, and an internationally known specialist in Chinese history and religion from Australia.

Searching for Values in China Today with an Exhibit of Chinese Christian Art Works

As China moves into the 21st century, a new generation searches for values that can sustain the new China. Young scholars and artists, aware of both the promise and peril of China's rapid material growth, look for resources to nurture the human spirit. This afternoon symposium featuring faculty members of the GTU, research fellows of the USF Ricci Institute, and two Chinese artists, will examine evidence of contemporary China's spirital search from the perspective of philosophy, religious studies, and the arts.
