Professor of History at the University of Illinois, Chicago


Dr. Hostetler's research deals with imperial encounters and ethnography in modern Chinese history. Her publications include: "Qing Colonial Enterprise: Ethnography and Cartography in Early Modern China" (University of Chicago Press, 2001) and "The Art of Ethnography: A Miao Album of Guizhou Province" (University of Washington Press, 2005). In addition to her own research, Dr. Hostetler will co-chair an international symposium on cartography and cultural exchange at the Ricci Institute in April 2016. The EDS-Stewart Chair is awarded to distinguished scholars of cross-cultural encounters between China and the West.
