MAPS

While the Institute has numerous maps of various descriptions in its Library collection, the map information that will be referenced and linked on this page comes from more ambitious projects involving the display of map data online.

ECAI and Charbonnier's Guide to the Catholic Church in China (中國天主教指南)
For the past decade, the Ricci Institute has been a member of ECAI, the Electronic Cultural Atlas Initiative. ECAI was formed to develop technology for the humanities and social sciences using the focal point of maps and georeferencing technology. The aim of ECAI has been to make virtual collections of scholarly data from around the world accessible through a common interface.

The Ricci Institute is currently compiling and contributing geodata on both modern and historical Catholic churches and institutions in China. Much of the data has been compiled by Fr. Jean Charbonnier in his exhaustive studies of the Church in China. The data will be used to create a virtual Atlas of Chinese Religions using applications such as TimeMap and Google Earth. This process demands a partnership between scholars and technical experts, with the goal of designing a common architecture that will reveal previously hidden aspects of East-West interchange. These pages will host data that results from the combined efforts of ECAI and the Institute.

The 1907 Atlas of the Chinese Empire by Edward Stanford
A work in progress, these pages will feature an electronic version of the information contained in the Atlas, detailing the locations of hundreds of Protestant mission stations throughout the 18 provinces of late Qing China and the names of the dozens of mission societies that established missions in each locale.

Please note the screenshot below from Google Earth. Currently, Guangdong is the only province completed. Viewing the Atlas information will require the user to have Google Earth installed and to utilize a so-called "network link" to the information.
